Neck Pain

The neck is an important part of the body as it provides movement and flexibility to our head, but due to its location and range of motion, it can often be left unprotected and at risk for injury. Neck pain can vary in severity from mild discomfort that resolves itself with rest or over-the-counter medication, all the way up to disabling chronic pain which may require more intensive treatment such as physical therapy or even surgery. If you are experiencing any kind of neck pain, you must seek medical advice so that a proper diagnosis can be made and appropriate treatments recommended.

Neck pain can be caused due to various reasons like inflammatory diseases, injuries, or age-related disorders. Various causes of neck pain are-

  • Damage to the muscles, tendons, or ligaments
  • Herniated disk in the neck
  • Arthritis, such as osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis
  • Cervical (neck) disk degeneration
  • Problems of the vertebrae and bones present at birth (congenital)
  • Tumors

Some of the symptoms of neck pain are tenderness, stiffness, sharpness, and burning or tingling in the concerned area. Sometimes other symptoms occur along with neck pain, such as headaches or weakness in your arm or hand. Pain can also spread to your back.

Along with a complete medical history and physical exam, diagnostic procedures for neck pain may include:

  • Blood tests can help diagnose underlying inflammatory disease.
  • Electromyogram (EMG) and nerve conduction studies are done together to evaluate nerve function.
  • X-rays to make images of bones.
  • MRI to identify damage or disease of internal structures within a joint or in a nearby ligament or muscle.
  • Computed tomography (CT) Scan to show detailed images of the problem area.

Treatment of neck pain may include rest, physiotherapy, medicine to reduce inflammation and pain, neck brace, massage therapy, exercise, or osteopathic manipulation.
