Total knee replacement

Knee replacement – In knee replacement surgery, the damaged or worn out, or injured parts of the knee are replaced. The surgery helps the patient to get ease the pain and to make their knee work better. In the process of surgery, the damaged part of the wound gets replaced with parts that are made of plastic and metal. With the help of an X-ray, the extent of damage is observed by an orthopedic doctor like Dr. Rahul Grover. The knee replacement procedure takes place in four types which include, total knee replacement, partial or unicompartmental knee replacement, and the kneecap or patellofemoral arthroplasty.

Total knee replacement – Total knee replacement (TKR) is also called total knee arthroplasty (TKA). In the process of total knee replacement, it is treated as a surgical treatment. Total knee replacement surgery involves the replacement of the articular surface that is the tibial plateau and femoral condyles which are located in the knee joint with highly cross-linked polyethylene plastic and smooth metal. The total replacement has the main target to make the quality of life better.

During the process of surgery, Dr. Rahul places at least one polyethylene piece between the femur and tibia in the form of a shock absorber. The prostheses are generally strengthened with cement but are left uncemented. This is because they have to leave some space for the natural growth of bone. The patella gets resurfaced or replaced.

The major goal of total knee arthroplasty is to correct the position and alignment. It also focuses on the balancing of the soft tissues. It also ensures the implant fixes the bone.
