What is Knee Replacement – Knee replacement is also commonly known by the name total knee replacement or by knee arthroplasty. Knee replacement is a process that involves the replacement of worn-out or injured knee joints. The procedure of knee replacement helps the patient to let their knee work better by easing out the pain.
The procedure of Knee Replacement – The procedure of knee replacement includes the exchange of the part of the knee with plastic parts which is also called a prosthesis and by metal and cemented prosthesis as well. There are two types of knee replacement that take place by the doctor depending upon the damage that is caused to the knee of the patient. The first is a partial replacement in which the knee of the diseased is replaced partially and the other is a total knee replacement where the whole of the knee gets replaced. These days total knee replacement is more common among suffering patients.
Before the procedure of knee replacement –
Prior to the knee replacement procedure, the doctor lets the patient gain each and every possible detail regarding the surgery. Post that, the patient is asked to sign a consent with the doctor in a form, which is permission of the patient to the doctor to undergo the necessary surgery. Sometimes, the patient is also asked to undergo varieties of tests before the treatment such as a blood test or maybe any other diagnostic test as well. Before the surgery takes place, the patient is asked to go on a fast for a minimum of 8 hours.
During the procedure of knee replacement –
While the knee replacement process is undergoing, the patient is asked to stay in the hospital for some days. This is because it will help the doctor to have a proper check on the diseased patient. Usually, the knee replacement process takes place when the person is asleep under anesthesia. After that, an intravenous (IV) line gets started in the hand or the arm of the patient. Then there is an anesthesiologist in the surgery room who keeps watch on the blood pressure (BP), heart rate, blood oxygen level, and breathing of the patient during the time of the surgery. In the process of the surgery, the doctor removes the damaged area of the knee joint and will resurface it with the prosthesis. Usually, a cemented prosthesis is used by doctors as it results way better than any other kind of prosthesis. A prosthesis that contains cement is attached to the bone of the patient with the help of surgical cement. A prosthesis is a combination of varieties of the elements in it. Post that, the operated area is closed by placing some stitches on the knee of the patient and by dressing or a sterile bandage.
Post the procedure of knee replacement –
After the knee replacement procedure takes place successfully, the patient is kept under observation for a few days and gets discharged from the hospital. After getting back home, the patient has to be in some precautions that are suggested by the doctor such as to keep the surgical area dry and clean. After post few days, the surgical staples or the stitches get removed during a follow-up visit to the doctor.
